AUSTRALIAN ROOT SERVER CONFEDERATION

WinNT!   This is "FUN"

Most ISPs have TWO separate machines running DNS. It's called REDUNDANCY and is generally required. If you don't you can skip the "Secondary Server" section.

PRIMARY DN SERVER

  1. First SHUT DOWN your DNS server. This is important or your new root.cache file will be overwritten.

  2. Copy the root.cache file over \WINNT\system32\DNS\cache.dns

  3. Restart your DNS Server

  4. Using the DNS Manager select your PRIMARY server and right click. Select PROPERTIES.

  5. Click on the Forwarders Tab.

  6. DE-SELECT "Use Forwarders"

  7. The quickest way to test is NSLOOKUP.  Open a Command windows and type:

    C:\>nslookup
    Default Server:  alpha.ah.net
    Address:  203.21.204.10

    > set type=any
    > .
    Server:  alpha.ah.net
    Address:  203.21.204.10

    Non-authoritative answer:
    (root)  nameserver = rs3.aursc.ah.net
    (root)  nameserver = rs1.aursc.ah.net
    (root)  nameserver = rs2.aursc.ah.net
    (root)
            primary name server = rs2.aursc.ah.net
            responsible mail addr = AT.ah.net
            serial  = 1998030101
            refresh = 10800 (3 hours)
            retry   = 900 (15 mins)
            expire  = 604800 (7 days)
            default TTL = 86400 (1 day)

    (root)  nameserver = rs3.aursc.ah.net
    (root)  nameserver = rs1.aursc.ah.net
    (root)  nameserver = rs2.aursc.ah.net
    rs3.aursc.ah.net        internet address = 203.29.72.14
    rs1.aursc.ah.net        internet address = 203.21.205.2
    rs2.aursc.ah.net        internet address = 203.21.205.3

  8. That's it for the Primary Server.  It's now running perfectly.

Now really, that wasn't so bad - was it?

If you have secondary Servers, CLICK HERE and I'll fill you in on what to do to make your network so efficient and save you hundreds of dollars in extra requests and traffic. (At least it will save you money in Australian where we pay by the MEGABYTE for data!  Yes that's right!)
